Translated from a centuries-old tradition of metal working and craftsmanship, Stephen Teichmans detailed prints are inspired by Nature. The graceful musculature of a yearling. The billowy curls of a wooly sheep. The shimmer and texture of a prize trout. Whatever the subject, each remarkable print captures the beauty of its subject through the artists gifted eye and skilled hand. Each of Stephens original engravings begins with a series of pencil sketches. Once he captures the lines and textures of his subject he then translates his vision to a copper plate through a variety of traditional engraving techniques. Line engraving produces clean, crisp edges. Acid adds texture and subtle shading. Dry point engraving, with its characteristic burns or curls on the metal surface, adds depth and softness to a finished work. No two engravings are exactly alike. The quality of a fine art engraving is determined by three factors: the artists cutting and etching techniques, the process of inking the engraved plate, and the paper used in the finished product. As an engraving comes to life, a sample is made by carefully inking and wiping the plate to determine how the ink will transfer on to a final print. Then the process begins again—reworking and refining the piece countless times to achieve the delicate detail and subtle nuances that are the hallmark of his work. Finally, the plate is set into a hand press and printed on a single sheet of specially prepared stock to create a single print. The process is painstaking. The result, exquisite. Stephens engravings—usually measuring no more than a few inches—may take months to create and once completed will produce only a handful of finished prints. Each superbly executed. Each a testament to the artists personal vision and a love of his craft.
